Cycling among pedestrians
Shared-use routes such as the riverside path by Tesco and the new Living Cliffe can be alarming to both cyclists and pedestrians. Help keep things moving smoothly!
-
Cycle carefully and give way to pedestrians
- Keep to the left of the path - just as you would on a road
- Be aware that people may have mobility problems
- Use a ring of your bell or a polite ‘excuse me' to warn people you are passing - don't take them by surprise
- Some pedestrians may be hard of hearing: don't assume that everyone can hear you when using your voice or cycle bell
- Look out for unpredictable movements, particularly by children and dogs
One London cyclist we know of has a squeaky toy fixed to his handlebars. He finds it always raises a smile rather than a scowl when he uses it to alert pedestrians!
Lewes Living Streets (formerly the Pedestrians Association) is particularly worried about the blind bends round the side of Harvey's brewery yard between Cliffe and Tesco, so mind how you go here.
