Sustrans Route 90 through Lewes

Latest

Sustrans regional routes are due to be re-numbered as National Routes in 2009, so Route 90 may never be completed under that name!

Background

Route 90 is the Sustrans regional route linking Brighton to the Cuckoo Trail via the A27 cycle path, Lewes, Glynde and Berwick. It has never been completely signed - mostly because a route through Lewes has yet to be agreed.

Visitors to Lewes would probably want to ride along the High Street, dismounting in the centre to explore the town, but for an everyday quieter route the proposed Route 90 runs from Montacute Road down to Winterbourne Lane, through the Bell Lane recreation ground, and via Southover Road and Pinwell Lane to Cliffe, South Street, along the riverside path and through the Cliffe Industrial Estate and Southerham to re-emerge on the A27 cycle path.

The main obstacle is Bell Lane recreation ground, where some feel that a route for cyclists away from the existing playground is needed - two options have been proposed and we do not have strong views on either. The priority must be agreeing a route so that it can be described and promoted, so as to encourage cycling in and around Lewes.
